Flamenco’s new trends arrange to meet
at Festival Vaivenes 2008

Joaquín el de la Paula Festival has gotten a rebellious neighbor. Just a few days after the traditional cante event celebrates its thirtieth anniversary, Festival Vaivenes Flamencos will premiere a showcase of heterodox flamenco. And it will be at the same setting; the emblematic castle in the Seville-area town of Alcalá de Guadaíra. From July 5th to 12th, this new festival is to offer eight shows lined up with the idea of “stage avant-garde”, which is the bill’s slogan.

The trends of today’s baile are to be displayed at Vaivenes Flamencos 2008 with ‘Dos voces para un baile’ by the Javier Barón Company; ‘La voz de su amo’ by the Belén Maya Company; and ‘Turquesa como el limón’ by Rocío Molina and Laura Rozalén.

There are three instrumental options: ‘Sin precedentes’ by the flamenco jazz trio consisting of Carles Benavent, Jorge Pardo and Tino di Geraldo; ‘Andando el tiempo’ by guitarist Gerardo Núñez; and ‘Cal’ by Son de la Frontera. There’s even fusion between flamenco and the circus; ‘Malgama’ by the Compañía Varuma Teatro.

The finishing touch will be provided by cantaor Enrique Morente and rock group Lagartija Nick, with one of the most groundbreaking projects in the last decade: ‘Omega’.
