Cante’s traditional triangle
keeps on beating. And proof of that vitality is the bill
of the 2008 Casabermeja Cante Grande Festival. Triana
will be represented by José
de la Tomasa, a direct descendant of Manuel Torre.
José Valencia will emphasize Lebrija, the land
of Pinini. And the Jerez air will be invoked by Manuel
Moneo. The proof of how all those influences transgress
borders will be Miguel
Poveda, the cantaor who won the National Music Prize
last year. The toque will be taken care of by Chicuelo,
Manuel Iglesias and Manuel Moneo ‘Barullito’.
And the baile will be in the hands of young Málaga-born
bailaora Luisa Palicio, a pupil of Milagros Mengíbar,
maestra of the Sevillian school.

With this lineup the festival of the
Málaga-area town of Casabermeja, near the Costa
del Sol, has reached thirty-seven editions, which are
given a special touch here that is called ‘entanganar’;
drinking a glass of wine around a table while flamenco
is heard and seen, and the aroma of thyme, rosemary and
mint plants carpeting the floor of the venue. This year
around eight hundred people are expected to attend the
event, one of the oldest summer festivals in Andalusia.
Camarón, José Mercé and José
Menese are some of the cantaores who have polished its
archives.
