Flamenco gains strength in Asia.
From October 30th to November 18th, 2007, over forty cante,
baile and toque artists will perform in China hand in
hand with the organization Flamenco Festival. In Beijing
the shows are set within the events of the Year of Spain
in China 2007, while in Hong Kong they’re part of
the Mediterranean Arts Festival. Moreover, a flamenco
dancing gala visits the Australian cities of Sydney, Melbourne,
Brisbane and Perth. The troupe is led by Carmen
Linares, Merche Esmeralda, Belén
Maya and the group Ojos de Brujo.

Flamenco Festival returns. Following
its success at Expo Aichi 2005, the organization is putting
the final touches on its arrival in China, with a total
of nine shows. Those in Hong Kong are set within the Mediterranean
Arts Festival 2007, which also includes Gnawa, Egyptian,
Greek and Turkish music. Flamenco will be represented
there by the group Ojos
de Brujo; guitarist Juan Carlos Romero; a flamenco
gala with Carmen Linares, Miguel
Poveda and Rocío Molina; and a gala dedicated
to Seville with Merche Esmeralda and Belén Maya,
among other bailaores.
The program in Beijing is part of the
Year of Spain in China and is assigned to Ojos de Brujo
and ‘Gala de Sevilla’. Moreover, it offers
related activities at the Instituto Cervantes such as
educational workshops and an encounter with the artists
presented by Seville’s
Bienal de Flamenco. Independently of Flamenco Festival,
flamenco has already been present in this cultural celebration,
by the hand of artists like Jorge Pardo and Marina Heredia.
The festival in Australia
Coinciding with the artists’ presence
in Asia, ‘Gala de Sevilla’ will be presented
at the emblematic Opera House in Sydney, where Eva Yerbabuena
danced last January. The show, which includes different
flamenco dancing styles, will also be performed in the
cities of Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth from October 30th
to November 10th.
Both programs will finish the 2007 edition
of Flamenco Festival, which kicked off in January in the
United States, Canada and London. The organization is
now preparing the eighth edition, which next February
in New York will have artists such as Eva Yerbabuena and
the show ‘Mujeres’ with Merche Esmeralda,
Belén Maya and Rocío
Molina.
