Day 2008
in grand fashion

fills Córdoba with shows on June 21st
Flamenco-world.com, June 2008
Flamenco has appropriated the
celebration of European Music Day 2008. On June 21st,
several cities are to highlight the jondo genre, especially
Córdoba. The Ommiad city organizes a 'macroproposal',
Flamenco’s so-called ‘Sleepless Night’,
which will fill squares, courtyards and neighborhoods
with live flamenco by artists such as El
Pele, Miguel Poveda, Diego el Cigala, Paco Cepero,
Israel Galván and Chambao, among many others. In
Seville, the star will be El
Lebrijano, who will present the live version of ‘Cuando
Lebrijano canta se moja el agua’ downtown at Plaza
de San Francisco. And in Madrid, Enrique Morente and Lagartija
Nick recover ‘Omega’ at La Riviera, while
Tomasito
performs at Plaza Vázquez de Mella.

Córdoba will be a great late-night
tablao on Saturday the 21st with the celebration of flamenco’s
first ‘Sleepless Night’. Within the setting
of the activities preparing the city to be the Cultural
Capital in 2016, the city offers 43 different productions
at 55 locations, and with the participation of nearly
600 artists. Guitarist Manolo Sanlúcar will be
in charge of opening at Plaza de las Tendillas with the
staging of ‘Omeya’, a gala which will include
the vocals of cantaor Miguel Poveda and the baile of Israel
Galván. At Patio de los Naranjos, the art of
El Pele, Julián Estrada, Chaparro and Paco Serrano
can be enjoyed with the piece ‘La palabra de dios
a un gitano’. The most current side of flamenco
is displayed by Chambao at República Argentina.
And to close the night, beginning at
one in the morning, at Plaza de la Corredera there will
be a ‘Tribute to Camarón’,
in which Diego el Cigala, José el Francés,
Montse Cortés and La Tana will perform. Throughout
the night at the Teatro de la Axerquía, the art
can also be enjoyed of several ‘national prize’
winners from the famous Córdoba contest, such as
Fosforito,
Manuel Silveria and Paco Cepero. All of it, while the
street also becomes a star in this initiative, including
taverns, flamenco peñas, squares, and places as
emblematic as the Palacio de Orive or the Julio Romero
de Torres House-Museum.

Without reaching such large proportions,
other cities also resort to flamenco to celebrate European
Music Day. Seville will have cantaor El Lebrijano at Plaza
de San Francisco, presenting live his new album ‘Cuando
Lebrijano canta se moja el agua’. The concert, which
will be re-broadcast by Radio3, is organized by Fnac,
the same as that of Madrid, which will take eclectic flamenco
Tomasito to Plaza Vázquez de Mella in the heart
of Chueca. At the same time, also in the Spanish capital,
Enrique
Morente and Lagartija Nick will be at La Riviera with
the live show of the mythical album ‘Omega’.
Moreover, the celebration of such a special day coincides
with the event Flamenco en Escena 2008, which opens a
showcase with samples of innovative flamenco in the Cádiz-area
town of Arcos de la Frontera from June 19th to 22nd. On
the night in question, Choni Compañía Flamenca
presents ‘Tejidos al tiempo’; Compañía
Depuntillas performs the show ‘La botella vacía’;
and Cibayí premieres ‘8 códigos’
with Charo Cruz, Nono García and Encarna
Anillo.
