The album ‘Nueva
Frontera del Cante de Jerez 2008’ brings together voices
from Jerez's hotbed of contemporary talent. Thirty-five
years on from the recording of the original ‘Nueva Frontera
del Cante de Jerez’, the next generation of Jerez's homegrown
talent redraw the frontiers that were redefined in their day
by Rubichi, Manuel Moneo and El Torta. Eleven young cantaores
joined forces at La Bodega studios to make the double album.
José María Castaño - one of the producers
- notes that just as on the older gatherings, “we recorded
whatever they came up with, whenever they were ready to sing,
and strictly live”. Jesús
Méndez recorded a romance, Ezequiel Benítez
bulerías, Juanillorro did tangos de Tío Borrico,
El Tolo did a soleá, Niño de la Fragua performed
granaínas, El Quini did bulerías... and so on.
Fourteen songs in total, plus the essential fiesta por bulerías
featuring everyone. This isn't just about vocals. There's also
an array of up-and-coming homegrown guitarists, with guitar
accompaniment from Manuel Valencia, Juan Manuel Moneo, Pepe
del Morao and Miguel Salado.
