Mártires
del Compás is forced to cancel its U.S. tour, upon
being denied entry visas. According to a communiqué
sent by the group, “Repeated communications with the U.S.
consulate yielded little information as to the cause of the
delays” and attributed it to “security checks in
Washington”. The group suspects the political contents
of the lyrics on the record ‘Sin papeles/No papers’,
some of which are critical of the Bush Administration, are the
reason for the denial of their visas. The flamenco fusion group
had been scheduled to perform in the cities of Madison, Chicago,
Bloomington and New York from Saturday, September 17th, to Thursday,
September 29th, 2005. Mártires del Compás has
just re-released its six albums in a special box set, as well
as a compilation with a selection of twenty songs accompanied
by a documentary on DVD put together by designer Javier Mariscal's
workshop. This tour would have been further irrefutable proof
that the U.S. world music circuit is open to new flamenco acts,
as has been happening with bands such as Radio Tarifa and Ojos
de Brujo.
