Flamenco once
again appears at the 2007 Montreal Jazz Festival. In
its twenty-eighth edition, the emblematic Canadian festival
has opened its doors to the jondo, but through collective young
shows halfway between tradition and the avant-garde. Performing
at the Metropolis on June 29th before over ten thousand people
were the groups Ojos
de Brujo – who repeated following their concert in
the 2005 edition - and Son
de la Frontera. The night finished with a session by DJ
Panko, member of the flamenco hip hop band. They shared the
bill that night with Wayne Shorter Quartet and Mr. Scruff, among
other artists. Also appearing at the festival on July 6th was
guitarist Juan Carmona at the Carrefour General Motors outdoor
stage, where Son de la Frontera repeated their performance on
June 30th. But it’s not the first time flamenco has appeared
at the Montreal Jazz Festival, where it made it big in 1988
with the mythical concert by Paco de Lucía, Al di Meola
and John McLaughlin.
