Though the program doesn’t officially begin until late next month, Málaga en Flamenco has decided to take advantage of the magical night of July 7th, 2007 as a prologue. At a setting as special as Dolmen de Menga, located in the town of Antequera, an entire night of music has been scheduled. The show ‘En la puerta de la cueva’ brings together Senegalese percussionists, cantaores and bailaores, flamenco groups and verdiales gangs. And scheduled, among others, is the performance of artists such as Tomasito, Fernando Terremoto and Son de la Frontera. The second edition of the Málaga festival is to be held from August 25th to September 30th with some fifty shows to be held at different points in the province.

The show 'En la puerta de la cueva' takes care of opening Málaga en Flamenco 2007 “at a magical place, like the very main axis of the program, based on the occult number 7”. And it does so, according to festival director José Luis Ortiz Nuevo, with the music of the Senegalese group Borom Tamba, “some African drummers in charge of getting us ready for art to spring up from the earth”.

In the second block of performances, the conjunction of musical elements comes by the hand of José Luis Montón, flamenco guitarist, and Ara Malikian, classical violinist, with 'Humilde Poderío'. The center of the encounter is occupied by cante, “for it to have all of its tragic, traditional dimension”, with 'Del sentimiento trágico', which joins the performances of Fernando Terremoto, Gema Caballero, Antonio Higuero and Pedro Barragán.

Before the second break in this show with over six hours of music, it’s Tomasito’s turn with ‘Al compás de la ciencia de la burla’, “which displays the contrast between what is really new and what is old-time which precedes him in the program”. The final touch of this show is provided by 'Fiesta para el nuevo día', with the performance of Son de la Frontera and Panda de Santo Pitar. According to the director, “this performance will take place around six o’clock in the morning, at a key moment in the night and awaiting daybreak in Antequera”.

Festival in Antequera

And the thing is that the Málaga-area town, located in the center of Andalusia, is going to play an important role on the bill of the festival. On September 7th at Colegiata de Santa María, the premiere is scheduled of ‘Por los caminos que van’, a show in which cantaor Miguel Poveda will perform lyrics by Antequera-born poet José Antonio Muñoz Rojas.

A few hours earlier, the spectacular setting of El Torcal is going to be taken advantage of for Rocío Molina to dance with cante but without a guitar upon the stones of the natural spot. Both performances shape up the general bill of the festival, which will offer some fifty shows between August 25th and September 30th throughout the province, including a series paying tribute to Paco de Lucía.
