Suma Flamenca 2008 enters the
home stretch. And in doing so it moves the center of attention
to the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Circle)
in Madrid. From Thursday, June 12th to Sunday the 15th,
the Sala de Columnas of the unique building is going to
display a wide range of baile, cante and toque shows.
Ana
Salazar will unite French ‘chanson’ and
flamenco by singing to Edith Piaf. Pitingo will present
his new album, ‘Soulería’. Toni el
Pelao & La Uchi will commemorate the bailaor legacy
of their family in ‘Puro flamenco’, with Alicia
Gil’s cante as the prelude. And the edition will
be closed by Cañizares with ‘Suite Iberia’.

this week with current art forms at the Círculo
de Bellas Artes in Madrid. From Thursday, June 12th to
Sunday the 15th, the Madrilenian spring festival moves
to the Sala de Columnas of the cultural center. The series
kicks off on Thursday the 12th with the encounter between
flamenco and French culture which Ana Salazar makes materialize
by singing to Edith Piaf. “I’m going to dance
and sing this immense artist’s so good, so passionate
repertoire as alegrías or a soleá”,
the Cádiz-born cantaora and bailaora affirmed.

The following night, another brotherly
union, that of soul and flamenco advocated by Pitingo
with his new album, ‘Soulería’. Then
on Saturday the 14th, the stage will be stormed by the
dance pair consisting of maestros Toni
el Pelao & La
Uchi, after years without performing in their hometown:
“We haven’t worked in Madrid for many years.
We have been in Jerez and Seville over the past few seasons,
where the critics said that El Pelao came out on stage
like someone entering the Vatican”. And she added
that, besides the caña, alegrías, romera
and bulerías, they’ll dance the farruca,
“which we Pelaos do originally; others dance it
well, but nobody gives it our trademark”. As a prologue
to their performance, Sevillian Alicia Gil will present
her album, ‘Cantaora de bareto’.
Cañizares + Albéniz
The climax of the festival is going to
be taken care of by Cañizares.
The guitarist explained that he is going to split the
concert up into two parts: “The first one, an excerpt
from ‘Suite Iberia’ by Albéniz, which
I’ve been working on for four years; and the second,
a selection of works of my own”. According to the
musician, with this recital he kicks off a tour which
will take him to Latin America, Japan and the United States
in the months to come.
